DownloadAs of July 2022, you can now text or call 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (previously known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline). This confidential resource is available 24/7, 365 for those in need.
988 is a resource for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, suicidal thoughts and ideation, substance abuse, or emotional distress. 988 can also be used to help find support if worried about a loved one.
Veterans can press '1' after dialing 988 to be connected with the Veteran Crisis Line. Additionally, veterans can text '838255' to be connected through text.
The prevalence and effect of suicide in our society is confirmed by the statistics. Recognizing how many people are effected every day by suicide, either directly or indirectly, is important to understanding the issue as a whole and how we can work to overcome it. Mental illness prevention and education also plays a role in understanding suicide, as 46% of people who die by suicide have a diagnosable mental health condition (NAMI). Overall
-Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death among all age groups in the US. (CDC)
-90% of those who attempt do not go on to die by suicide. (AFSP)

LGBTQ+ Community
-LGB youth are 4x as likely to attempt suicide compared to their straight peers. (NAMI)
-40% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide. (NAMI)

Male Suicide
-79% of all people who die by suicide are males. (CDC)
-Females attempt suicide 3x as often as males. (CDC)
Veterans
-Depression is reported at time of death in 50% of veterans who die by suicide, of which only 22% were in treatment. (QPR)
-When suicide prevention programs were installed by the US Air Force, suicide rates decreased by 33%. (QPR)
